Summer Reading Challenge: Adventure Begins at Your Library

Pasco County Libraries — Summer Reading Challenge (“Adventure Begins at Your Library”)

Community Art Installation + Public Engagement + Adult Education Program

Lead Artist, Project Designer, Instructor, and Facilitator

For the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge, I designed a 30″ × 40″ community paint-by-numbers mural for teens and adults. I created the artwork digitally, projected it onto a donated gallery-wrapped canvas, and hand-outlined the full composition. Working with the marketing team, I provided a color reference and matched each section of the mural to specific Royal Talens Amsterdam acrylic paint numbers from a 72-color set I curated for the project.

The painting was displayed for two months (June–July) with brushes, paints, and instructions available for public drop-in participation. Teens, adults, and experienced artists contributed to the painting, and volunteers helped complete the final blending and detail work. The finished piece now hangs permanently in The Loft, the library’s fine-art makerspace, as a record of collective creativity and community engagement.

Concurrently, I taught an adult drawing and painting class focused on landscape fundamentals—perspective, atmospheric depth, composition, color harmony, and brush techniques—where participants created either a realistic or imaginative landscape tied to the summer theme.

The Florida landscape theme still sparks discussion, nostalgia, and local connection. The finished artwork demonstrates community ownership, intergenerational collaboration, and the evolving role of libraries as creative makerspaces.
